Decorating a Nursery
It's exciting to have a baby on the way.
One of the fun parts is decorating the nursery.
Here are a few tips for planning baby's
new room.
Selecting a Theme
While it’s tempting to put up baby
wallpaper, think about your child’s
development. Pastel colours and teddy bears
may be cute, but as your toddler gets older
they may not want a room decorated for an
infant. High contrast and bright colours
not only appeal to baby’s developing
senses, they also appeal to toddlers. Use
fun, colourful large-print wallpaper, or
if you’re creative, paint a mural
or pattern on one wall. And remember, infants
are messy, so make sure paint and/or wallpaper
is washable.
Flooring
Carpet is warm and comfortable for a baby
to crawl around on, but babies can take
a toll on carpet. Consider whether you’ll
be playing with the baby in the nursery.
A wood or laminate floor with an area rug
may be a better option.
Baby Decorations
Babies spend a lot of time in their crib,
so hang something high contrast and colourful
from the ceiling over the crib. Stuffed
animals, mobiles or high contrast fabric
can add a colourful touch to the nursery.
A border high on the walls can also provide
visual stimulation for your infant.
Shelving and Storage
For some odd reason babies accumulate a
lot of stuff, particularly stuffed animals.
Shelves running around the room a few feet
down from the ceiling provide ample storage
without using up room space. Bookshelves
and storage bins are also great additions
to the nursery.
Lighting
Soft, adjustable lighting is ideal for
a nursery. You’ll be spending a lot
of time in there during the middle of the
night and it’s nice to be able to
turn the lighting on low so your eyes can
adjust.
