Creating a Functional Nursery
Decorating a nursery involves more than
deciding on pink, blue or yellow. When decorating
a nursery, consider functionality as well
as aesthetics.
Dressing Table
A low dresser with ample storage can double
as a changing table. Make sure to install
a low rail or use a strap. Any parent can
tell you that it isn’t long before
a baby starts to roll and wiggle.
Crib Mattress Can Do Double Duty
Many cribs come with a mattress large enough
to move to a toddler bed when the time is
right. Make sure to use a waterproof cover
to keep the mattress in good shape.
Ceiling Fan
Consider installing a ceiling fan in the
nursery. It not only moves the air through
the room, many babies love to watch it go
around and around.
Make Room for Mom or Dad
You’ll spend a lot of time with the
baby at night time, so make sure there’s
a comfy chair for you. A rocking chair lets
you soothe the baby back to sleep, but if
that’s not your style, put in whatever
type of chair you prefer.
Kinder, Gentler Lighting
There’s nothing worse—for you
or the baby—than turning on a bright
light in the middle of the night. Install
a dimmer switch for the overhead light,
or put a small table lamp on the wall switch.
Nappy Disposal
You’ll want a good bin with a tight-fitting
lid for dirty nappies, whether you’re
using disposable or reusable. Optionally,
there are several units on the market specifically
designed for nappies.
Shelving and Storage
Make sure to plan for the accumulation
of stuffed animals and books. Many baby
dressers have small drawers which you quickly
outgrow. Wall shelves, cupboard storage
bins and a bookshelf can help you make optimal
use of the space you have. Wall shelves
positioned a foot and a half below the ceiling
provide storage without using room space.
